My 2008 Short List

Ok this list can change daily but here are my top 4 preferences for President in 08.

1. Barack Obama

2. John Edwards

3. Hillary Clinton

4. Chuck Hegel

5. Mitt Romney

You are probably asking, why is Mitt on the list.  Sure he is a cultural conservative, however he is not an Evangelical cultural conservative.  It would be very interesting to see how progressive a Mitt Romney presidency could be.

Chuck Hegel could leap frog Hillary Clinton on my list, but Chuck is still a long shot.  I think we have a very real chance that Hillary will be the next president, despite all the Bill Clinton naysayers.

It will be nice to have an actual leader in charge of the country.

The tables have changed.

Do you remember about … 6 months ago?  All the Republicans talked about was having “straight up or down votes” in the senate.  Now baby Republican Bitch Mitch McConnel and his minority cronies have voted to cut off debate on the Iraq War Resolution.  Welcome to the world of hating up or down votes.

Romney wears flip flops

Let me start off by saying that I kind of like Mitt Romney.  I think he is an ok leader who has skills that could make him an effective president.  If you have been following Mitt’s quest to be president you will note that there are an awful lot political positions that he is changing in an attempt to woo Republican voters.  A recent story in the Boston Globe highlighted Romney’s change on the gun control issue.  MITT:  Don’t let the republicans take your North Eastern progressive values away from you.  A truly moderate Republican would be a very good thing to have in the 2008 election.  Unfortunately Mitt and McCain seem to be swinging to the right.

I guess I’ll have to support Obama!

3000

Today we hit 3000 military deaths in Iraq.  Can someone tell me why they died?

We are loosing in Iraq.

While I am not going to give him any kudos for saying this, the last person in America to thing that the war was going well changed his mind.  George W. Bush said yesterday in an interview with the Washington post that we are not winning in Iraq.

What do we do in IRAQ?

I am watching Meet the Press.  Brooks and Friedman are talking about Iraq.  The situation has become so chaotic.  Many of us are waiting for the President– The Decider — to change his policy.  I think we have reached a point where there are no good decisions in Iraq.  We have past the point of no return.  We, the United States of America, have failed in Iraq.  We lost.  It sucks but it is true.  We were in over our heads.  The policy was flawed.  The Middle East is just to much of a tinderbox for we naive Americans who thought we could bring peace and Democracy to the world.  I think that this war may signal the decline of the America as the last remaining super power.  We simply do not have the goodwill left to be the diplomatic leader of the world.  What a shame.

Mormons in the news.

As a member, all be it possibly an extreme jack Mormon member, of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, it is my duty to report on what other members are doing in the world. Last Thursday Senator Gordon Smith R-Oregon, broke ranks with the president and withdrew his support of current policy in Iraq. Senator Smith claimed that the policy may be immoral because we continue to employ policies that have failed. I have to hand it to the Senator here— he is speaking plainly and honestly about the war. I get a strong feeling that Iraq will continue to divide the Republican party because of the way it relies on the personal convictions of one of the last Americans who still strongly supports the war —> George W. Bush.

Oh yeah and I bet Gordon Smith can dissent and still be a good Mormon 🙂

the election

I am so excited for the possible Democratic victory.  I believe that is is becoming necessary that regardless of our political persuasions we elect a Democratic majority in both houses to check the power that George Bush has exerted into our political system.  One man should not have the power to suspend habeas corpus for any reasons he or she deems fit.  An administration should be accountable for its mistakes.

I am going to work at the polls on November 7.  Democracy is cool!

War Crimes

This week we saw a “united” Republican party give the OK to Bush to torture detainees. A portion of this bill reportedly immunizes Bush and Cheney from being prosecuted as war criminals for past offenses. What is going on here ladies and gentleman? Do we have a monarch who is above the law? Is this still America? Are we still free? Does the constitution apply? How can we grant all of these powers to one man? I think we need to rejuvenate democracy in the United States first before we spread this mess around the Middle East. Democracy is threatened by this administration. The rule of law needs to be fairly applied to all.

War in Lebanon

War is never a good thing. However, I do feel a certain level of support for Israel in this conflict. While it is clear to me personally that Israel is just in their conflict with Hezbolla, Israel should be cautious with their actions.
